The Rim is the most important component of our SpectraTone/5MM Modular Mouthpiece System. We recommend settling on one rim size with one or two variations for use on your modular mouthpiece. This allows your embouchure to remain consistent as you experiment with the wide variety of cup, throat and backbore sizes available.

Six variations in 14 Diameters - .550" (14mm) to .680" (17.3mm)
Players with perfectly straight teeth prefer a different rim contour than those with braces or crooked teeth. And the diameter you've been playing on may be too large or small, which may limit your tone quality and range. The SpectraTone mouthpiece design takes these factors into account to help you make real progress.
- NEW "H" Rim - round inner contour designed for ultimate flexibility
- Standard - standard contour, average inner and outer radii
- "W" Wide - standard inner contour with wider outside contour
- "X" Semi-flat - slightly flat version of "Wide"
- "Y" Flat - just like it sounds, more surface area on your lips
- "Z" Very Flat - maximum surface area for less mouthpiece pressure

Size comparison chart
At Harrelson, we measure the actual Rim diameter where it meets the cup, as this is the actual diameter. Most other manufacturers measure the high point of the rim, which results in an inaccurate and inflated number not representative of the actual size due to inner radius variations. This means that any manufacturer using a high point value for a specific size is likely overstating the diameter by 40-50 thousandths of an inch.
For example: our 680 rim is larger in diameter than any rim we have ever measured, so it is unlikely you need to order something larger than 640 unless you play on very large rims.
Another example: our 614 rim is the exact diameter of pretty much all common 3 diameter rims from Bach and related copies.
